Adaptive Teaching
Adaptive Teaching at Clent Parochial Primary School
The term ‘adaptive teaching’, especially as set out in the Early Careers Framework and teacher standards, resets our expectations about what it means to differentiate, and it offers a more helpful and practical model. It is essentially being responsive to information about learning, then adjusting teaching to better match pupil need or meeting each child at their individual starting point. What does this look like in a classroom?
Some examples might be:
Adapting lessons, whilst maintaining high expectations for all, so that all pupils have the opportunity to meet expectations.
Balancing input of new content so that pupils master important concepts.
Making effective use of teaching assistants (as highlighted by EEF research)
Adaptive teaching is an approach that will look different in every school. School leaders play a vital role in helping staff achieve precision around exactly how this will look. Things such as context, subject and assessment all need to be considered to tailor the approach for our specific demographic. Most importantly, adaptive teaching allows for personalisation to allow every individual child to flourish at our school.
