Welcome to Beech Class 2016-2017
Year 6 had a great day at Woodfield House, along with friends from other pyramid schools. The children took part in a variety of activities, including archery, orienteering, climbing and bushcraft.
They embraced the opportunities, demonstrating team work, overcoming fears and facing challenges (including eating mealworms and termites!)
Well done, year 6!
Year 6 have been working hard over the last few weeks planning ideas to raise money for the key stage 2 end of term barbeque. They have been putting their learning of persuasive language to good effect: phoning and writing to retailers to ask for contributions and presenting a pitch to the PTFA to ask to be allowed to run stalls at the Summer Fayre. Their hard work paid off, as they received generous donations of vouchers from local supermarkets; a kind offer of sausages for the barbeque from Paddocks of Hagley; and made a healthy profit on their stalls, which included mocktails and a chocolate fountain. We definitely have some entrepreneurs in the making and the barbeque is on! Well done, year 6.
The children have been busy rehearsing and making scenery and props for our play. Please help the children to learn their lines – no scripts next week!
Cadbury World visit
We all very much enjoyed our trip to Cadbury World, where we learnt about the history of Cadburys; the life of a cocoa bean, from bean to bar; and the history of cocoa, including its importance to the Maya civilisation. The children learnt about the Maya number system, some of their beliefs and some of their gruesome rituals!
Year 6 are relieved that the SATS are finally over (although I think they quite enjoyed the breakfasts and snacks!). I have been really impressed with how hard they have all worked, and how calm and focussed they were during the actual week. Well done, Year 6.
Our topic this term is ‘Discovering the Riches of the Rainforest’. Beech class have begun the topic by researching some of the plants and animals of the rainforest, then recreating a rainforest in our classroom. The result is entirely the children’s ideas and creations, including the waterfall that we now need to dive through to enter the classroom and banana leaves, made to actual scale!
As part of this topic, we will be visiting Cadbury World on Monday 22nd May, where we will be learning about Chocolate and the Maya. Please return permission slips ASAP, if you have not already done so.
Beech Class have all made and written Christmas cards for the residents of The Foresters Nursing Home. They talked about what Christmas is like for people who are less fortunate than themselves.
This week we launched (excuse the pun!) our new topic with a visit to the National Space Centre, in Leicester. The children really enjoyed the day, learning about Earth and Space through the excellent interactive resources. Highlights of the day included experiencing life in space as an astronaut in the Planetarium, and programming space buggies to navigate and detect alien life on mars!
